Official sources today announced an attack on a mosque in Afghanistan in the town of Andesha in the Jowzara area of Herat province by an unidentified armed assailant, resulting in the death of at least six people and the injury of dozens.
Abdul Matin Qani, spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Interior, reported that the attacker opened fire on worshippers performing the evening prayer at the mosque around 9 PM GMT on Monday.
Local reports indicated that the targeted mosque belongs to the Shia minority in Afghanistan, with the mosque’s imam, who led the prayers, among the casualties.
The Iranian embassy in the capital Kabul condemned the attack on the mosque in Afghanistan, while no official condemnations have been issued by other countries as of yet.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but some sources suggest the possibility of an offshoot of the ISIS organization in the region being behind this terrorist act, given its history of targeting Shia communities in the country.
