“The Colombian President announces the the end of diplomatic relations with Israel and condemns the occupation’s attacks on Gaza.
In a surprising move, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia announced on Wednesday the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel, considering that countries cannot remain silent in the face of what is happening in Gaza. This announcement came during his participation in a massive march in the capital Bogotá on the occasion of Labor Day.
Petro pointed out that this decision comes due to what he described as “genocide” committed by the Israeli Prime Minister and his government. He stated in his speech, “Here before you, the government of change and the government of the republic declare that tomorrow we will sever diplomatic relations with Israel because it has a government and a president who commit genocide.”
Israel responded to this decision with condemnation, with its Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz describing it as a farce.
This step comes after a series of strong statements made by the Colombian President in previous months, where he strongly condemned the attacks carried out by Israel in Gaza, describing them as “genocide.”
Previously, he had announced the suspension of arms purchase deals from Israel after the massacre in Gaza.
Despite a resolution from the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire and warnings from the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s serious violations, Israel continues its war on Gaza unabated.
