The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, reported that NATO countries have implemented measures aimed at assisting Ukraine in case Donald Trump wins the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
Among these measures, according to the newspaper, NATO will send a senior civilian official to Ukraine to coordinate the supply of military aid to Kyiv.
Additionally, a headquarters will be established in Wiesbaden, western Germany, to coordinate the supply of military equipment and weapons, as well as to train the Ukrainian armed forces.
The New York Times also discussed this initiative last week, noting that this headquarters will be part of a NATO mission aimed at improving the flow of military assistance and creating a bridge for Ukraine’s potential membership in the alliance.
According to the Wall Street Journal, these measures have been in the works for several months but have gained urgency following the recent debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The plan will also help bring the equipment and training levels of Ukrainian forces closer to those of NATO armies. The developed initiatives will be announced at the NATO summit in Washington on July 9-11.
During the summit, NATO members will not invite Ukraine to join the alliance but are expected to pledge long-term financial assistance. For example, current NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has proposed committing the alliance to allocate 40 billion euros annually to Ukraine.
The Telegraph, citing sources, reported that the allies plan to approve a “roadmap” for Ukraine’s entry into NATO at the summit as a sign of support for this process.
