Hundreds of Israeli protesters tried to reach the residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in West Jerusalem to pressure the government into making a prisoner exchange deal with Palestinian factions.
The newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that hundreds of Israelis demonstrated near Netanyahu’s residence on Gaza Street in West Jerusalem, attempting to reach the residence, but were blocked by police. Additionally, dozens of protesters in Tel Aviv, demanding a prisoner exchange deal, attempted to block a section of the main Ayalon Highway in the city center, according to the same source.
In the city of Netanya, hundreds of Israelis protested at the entrance to the city, holding a large banner that read “Enough, Government of Destruction.”
Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu stated that the plan approved by his government, and welcomed by U.S. President Joe Biden, would allow Israel to retrieve prisoners without compromising other war objectives.
According to official Israeli reports, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas have resumed to reach an agreement for a prisoner exchange and a ceasefire in Gaza.
For months, mediation efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have been attempting to broker an agreement between Israel and Hamas to ensure a prisoner exchange from both sides and a ceasefire, which would guarantee the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian territory. However, mediation efforts have been hindered by Netanyahu’s refusal to meet Hamas’s demands to stop the war.
Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza with U.S. support, resulting in over 125,000 Palestinian casualties, most of whom are children and women, and more than 10,000 missing amidst extensive destruction and severe famine.
Israel continues the war, ignoring two United Nations Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate halt and orders from the International Court of Justice to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
