United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today condemned the “hostile rhetoric” from Israel and Hezbollah, which raises fears of an “unimaginable catastrophe,” saying, “Let’s be clear, the peoples of the region and the world cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza.”
Guterres added, “We are deeply concerned about the escalating tension between Israel and Hezbollah,” noting that UN peacekeeping forces are working to calm the situation and prevent miscalculations.
He continued, “One reckless move or one miscalculation can lead to a disaster far beyond borders and frankly beyond imagination.”
This comes as battles continue in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah and the Israeli army since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7. Hezbollah and Israel exchange fire across the border almost daily. Recently, Hezbollah has intensified its attacks on Israeli positions, targeting them with dozens of rockets and drones, asserting that this is “in support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their valiant resistance,” according to their statement.
