Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s lawyers requested yesterday, Friday, to suspend the case against him for mishandling classified documents, citing a Supreme Court decision that grants him broad immunity from prosecution.
In the lawsuit, Trump’s lawyers asked Judge Aileen Cannon for a partial halt to proceedings to allow them to study the “implications” of the Supreme Court’s decision on the Florida case regarding Trump’s mishandling of classified documents.
Trump faces an indictment in Florida accusing him of endangering national security by retaining highly classified documents after leaving the White House.
In the Florida case, Trump faces 31 charges related to the willful retention of national defense information, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison, as well as charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements.
He is accused of keeping classified documents, including files from the Pentagon and the CIA, insecurely at his private residence in Mar-a-Lago, and obstructing efforts to retrieve them.
