In a notable development, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the decision of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, Friday, which recommends that the Security Council positively reconsider Palestine’s membership.
Jamel Rashedi, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, expressed appreciation for the overwhelming vote in favor of the resolution, noting that it clearly reflects the direction of international public opinion and global will. He added that this clear voice makes it difficult to ignore its significance.
Aboul Gheit emphasized the need for countries supporting the two-state solution to accelerate their efforts to realize this vision. He affirmed the importance of recognizing the Palestinian state and granting it full membership in the United Nations as crucial steps towards achieving this goal.
Rashedi pointed out the hostile reactions of some Israeli representatives to this decision, considering it as revealing Israel’s stance towards the principles of the international system. He called for continued diplomatic pressure against countries supporting Israel within the United Nations, especially in the Security Council.
