U.S. State Department Approves Sale of Abrams Tanks to Bahrain for $2.2 Billion

The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of Abrams tanks and related equipment to Bahrain for an estimated cost of $2.2 billion, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday.

In September, the U.S. and Bahrain signed a security and economic agreement in Washington.

The security agreement was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Bahraini Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa in Washington.

After signing the security agreement, Blinken said that defense and intelligence cooperation between the two countries would expand, and that the agreement was aimed at increasing cooperation in areas such as defense, security, technology, and trade.

The U.S. Secretary of State also added that this comprehensive agreement integrates security and prosperity and deepens bilateral cooperation in three very important ways.

  • Bahrain hosts the largest U.S. military base in the region. The U.S. Fifth Fleet is headquartered in Bahrain, and thousands of U.S. troops are stationed in the country.
  • Bahrain is considered a major non-NATO ally of the United States.
