A Helicopter Crash in Iran Leads to the Death of the Iranian President and Other Officials
Iranian official sources reported on Monday that a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan Province, located in the northwest of the country, resulted in the deaths of the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir Hossein Abdollahian, and several other officials.
Iranian state media confirmed the news, which was also announced by Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter).
The helicopter crashed in the rugged mountainous region of Jolfa, where adverse weather conditions prevailed. The crash occurred as the Iranian delegation was returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a joint dam on the Aras River border with Azerbaijan. This event was attended by the Iranian president and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, on Sunday morning.
Following the crash, extensive search and rescue operations were launched, involving dozens of teams facing significant challenges due to thick fog and strong winds. After the conclusion of the search efforts, Iranian authorities announced the deaths of President Raisi, aged 63, Foreign Minister Abdollahian, and the other accompanying officials.
Ebrahim Raisi, elected as the President of Iran in 2021, succeeded Hassan Rouhani, becoming the eighth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
